Referee

In today’s episode I’m talking to hockey referee Kendall Hanley.

Kendall began playing college hockey at Elmira College before relocating to play at SUNY Oswego, where she earned a BS in Zoology. When Kendall first started looking for a way to stay involved in the sport she loves, she found a network of female referees in Dallas. He began serving as director of hockey for clubs in Dallas and Colorado, while continuing to move up the ranks as a referee.

As Kendall started playing at a higher level, she made the difficult decision of changing career paths. While continuing as a referee, he found flexible jobs that allowed him to pursue a career that in itself could not provide stability. Kendall’s love of animals inspired her to first start her own dog walking business and later work for a company that produces fresh pet food.

Alicia Hanrahan saw her friend and fellow Officer Kendall Hanley last week.

Through a closed glass door.

Hanrahan, an Egan native who refereeed the Sochi Games, left a gift for Hanley, who started over the weekend for the Winter Olympics in Beijing. As a precaution during the pandemic, Hanley has been on strict quarantine protocol at her St. Louis Park home before becoming a lineperson for women’s hockey games in China.

Hanley, a native of Raleigh, NC, first found a love for the sport by watching the Stanley Cup playoffs on TV and playing street hockey. She went to a prep school in Massachusetts before playing four years of Division III hockey, first at Elmira College, then at SUNY-Oswego, where she earned a degree in zoology. Once she graduated in 2009, she didn’t think there were going to be more opportunities for women in hockey.

But when visiting her father in Dallas in her final semester of school, a woman she met at a hockey pickup game mentioned she was an officer, and it opened a whole new avenue of possibilities for Hanley.

Since then, she has been moving up the substitute ranks and jumping from Texas to Colorado to Illinois and finally to Minnesota five years ago, when her partner’s job moved her here. Hanley owns a dog-walking business—he has a yellow lab as well as a coop of chickens for his pets—and also works for a local fresh pet food company.

However, his main focus is preparing for this Olympic occasion. She converted her one-car detached garage into a gym for the summer, using the street as her running runway. For the winter, she commands her basement and skates at any outdoor rink in Minnesota, working on her edge control.

Hanley said, “Everyone who plays at this level on the athlete’s side is extremely fit.” “They are training day after day. So we should have the same fitness level. So I have a very regular and intense training program

Salary

The New York Yankees have the highest payroll in baseball. Not surprisingly, he has the highest paid player in baseball in Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod will be paid $32 million for the 2011 season. That’s only $4.1 less than the entire Kansas City Royals team.

Does the production in the plate justify the investment?

I’ve rated the performances so far this season for the highest paid fielders from each major league team. The resulting rankings were based on offensive output—hits, runs, RBIs and games played. Data were normalized for each player’s salary and then scored.

Some readers may find the ranking unfair as the data was not averaged on a per-game basis and would overestimate the ranking of any player on the handicap list. While injuries are a part of the game, salaries are still being paid and the player is not producing.
