He began his collegiate playing career in Texas, where he redshirted before playing seven games of safety in 2001 and intercepting two passes in 2002. He then transferred to Houston and went to wide receiver, catching 70 passes for 680 yards and a score. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management from Houston in 2005 and was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame in 2014.

He scored a total of 9,322 yards of offense and a total of 98 touchdowns in his final two high school seasons. He spent his senior season at Wolfforth Frenchship and earned his second Offensive Player of the Year honor after passing for 3,584 yards and 35 touchdowns, rushing for 1,074 yards and 19 scores.

As a junior, playing for his father in Stephenville, Briles won the 1999 Texas 4A Offensive Player of the Year recognition after leading the team to a 16–0 record and a 4A state title. He passed for 3,137 yards and 28 touchdowns as a junior, rushing for 1,331 yards and 16 scores. He also earned a pair of letters in track, was an all-district basketball player and was inducted into the 2014 Texas High School Football Hall of Fame.
