Kenneth Howard Norton Sr. (August 9, 1943 – September 18, 2013) was an American professional boxer who competed from 1967 to 1981, and held the WBC World Heavyweight Championship in 1978. He is best known for his feud with Muhammad Ali. Norton won the first by split decision, lost the second by split decision, and lost the final by a controversial unanimous decision. Norton also fought a slugfest with Larry Holmes in 1978, losing narrowly to a split decision.

Before facing Ali in San Diego on March 31, 1973, he was a light-hearted traveler who fought some of the top opponents. He was a single father raising his son and earning only $300 for his last fight, which was held in front of a crowd of 700.

Norton was badly injured in a fatal car accident in 1986. He recovered but never regained his full physical mobility.
Norton’s magnificent body finally succumbed to heart failure on Wednesday at a care facility in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson, Nevada. It was the last in a long series of physical challenges that had forced Norton over the past 27 years. In 1986, a near-fatal car accident broke his jaw, ribs, and legs, shattered his skull, erased parts of his memory, and caused a brain injury that permanently slowed his speech. His doctors told him he would never walk or talk again, but he certainly beat the odds. In later years he underwent quadruple bypass surgery, suffered a heart attack, overcame prostate cancer and survived a couple strokes.
