When Kelvin Kiptum tore the finish line tape in Chicago there were no other runners in sight. The 23-year-old Kenyan player not only won on Sunday, but also created a new world record.
Kiptum crossed the finish line at the Chicago Marathon with an unofficial time of 2 hours and 35 seconds. If confirmed, Kiptom would knock off two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge’s record set at the 2022 Berlin Marathon by 34 seconds.
World record
Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptom celebrates after winning the 2023 Chicago Marathon professional men’s division and setting a world record marathon time of 2:00.35 at Grant Park on Sunday in Chicago, Illinois.
This will also make Kiptom the first athlete in the world to break the time of 2 hours and 1 minute in a record-eligible marathon.
According to World Athletics, Kiptum said, “I knew I was coming for a course record, but for a world record – I’m very happy.” “No world record was on my mind today, but I knew that one day I would be a world record holder.”
Training
Kelvin Kiptom will not slow down or cut back on intense training, even if it could cut short the new men’s marathon world record holder’s career, his coach Gervais Hakizimana says.
Kenyan Kiptom, 23, set a world record of two hours and 35 seconds to win the Chicago Marathon on Sunday, the third victory of his career after wins in Valencia last year and London last April.
Kiptom is very strong. He does all the training properly. He is in his best years but at some point I fear he will get injured,” Hakizimana told AFP.
“He’s been training a lot. He’s in danger of breaking down at this pace, I offered him to slow down the pace but he doesn’t want to do it.
“I told him he’d be done in five years, he needed to calm down to continue in athletics.”
Shoes
Kelvin Kiptum breaks marathon world record in Nike AlphaFly 3 sneaker prototype. On Saturday, Kiptum won the 2023 Chicago Marathon with a finishing time of 2 hours and 35 seconds. The Kenyan wore a pair of prototype Nike Alphafly 3 sneakers. A Nike spokesperson confirmed to Footwear News that the sneakers will be released to consumers in “early 2024.”
Eyes red
Why do his eyes look like that? Is doping involved? …Possibly sickle cell anemia. When it flares up, your eyes start appearing yellow/red. In an interview with Olympics.com, Kenyan Kelvin Kiptom explained how he plans to run the third marathon of his career in Chicago and how fast he can race Eliud Kipchoge’s world record. The race will be broadcast live on Sunday 8 October on the Olympic Channel via Olympic.com
