The University of Houston men’s basketball team will be without two of their leaders for Saturday night’s match-up against South Carolina due to COVID-19.

According to a press release, both Head Coach Kelvin Sampson and Assistant Coach Kellen Sampson were impacted by COVID-19 contact tracing protocols, forcing them to sit out the game.

Cougars assistant coach Quannas White will act as head coach during the game. “Our staff has been a big part of our success, and I have complete faith in Quannas, our coaches and staff and all our young men,” head coach Sampson said.

After an incident following No. 13 Houston’s loss Saturday at No.9 Alabama basketball, coaches Kelvin and Kellen Sampson have apologized to UA. Kelvin Sampson is Houston’s head coach. Kellen, his son, is an assistant coach for the Cougars. Alabama (7-1) beat Houston, 83-82 at Coleman Coliseum.

Houston

Following the expiration of the five-year show cause penalty, the Houston Cougars hired Sampson to coach the men’s basketball team on April 2, 2014. Sampson was instrumental in Houston’s push to raise funds to build a $25 million practice facility in 2016 and a $60 million renovation to Hofheinz Pavilion (renamed the Fertitta Center) in 2018.

Sampson led Houston to the NIT in his second and third seasons. In 2018, Houston posted its first Top 25 finish and won its first NCAA tournament game since 1984. In 2019, the Cougars won a school-record 33 games, only the fourth 30-win season in school history. They also advanced to the Sweet Sixteen, their deepest run in the tournament since advancing all the way to the national championship game in 1983 and 1984.
