(CNN) Stanford University star soccer player Katie Meyer has died by suicide, her mother told NBC’s “Today” show during an emotional interview on Friday.

Meyer, a senior who helped secure the 2019 NCAA Championship title for the Cardinals, was found dead in his dorm room on Tuesday, according to the university.

“The last few days are like a parent’s worst nightmare and you don’t wake up from it, so it’s horrifying,” Katie’s mother, Gina Meyer, said in the taped interview. Meyers told NBC that he had spoken to his daughter hours before she died.

Stanford University championship-winning football goalkeeper Katie Meyer, who was found dead in her campus dorm room on Tuesday, died by suicide, according to officials.

Meyer, 22, captain of the Cardinals women’s soccer team, was the opening goalkeeper for the national championship game for Stanford in 2019, helping the Cardinals defeat North Carolina in their third NCAA women’s soccer title.

Mayer’s death was confirmed Friday by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office as “self-inflicted.”

“She died by suicide,” Mayer’s mother, Gina, also told NBC News ‘Today’ on Friday. “The last few days are like a parent’s worst nightmare and you don’t wake up from it. So it’s just awful.”

Stanford soccer goalkeeper Katie Meyer’s parents revealed Friday morning that their daughter died by suicide Tuesday at the age of 22. Meyer was found dead on a campus and officials in Santa Clara County, California determined the cause of death, noting that there was no sign of foul play involved.

Katie Meyer’s parents, Steven Meyer and Gina Meyer, spoke with the TODAY Show about their daughter’s death and announced that they have set up a foundation in her name. The parents said that they had spoken to Katie a few hours before her death and had no indication that anything was wrong with her. He said she seemed to be in very good spirits.

“She died by suicide. The last few days are like a parent’s worst nightmare and you don’t wake up from it,” he told TODAY. “So it’s terrifying. I don’t think it’s hit us yet. We’re still in shock. But we didn’t have any red flags… We’re just struggling now. We know that.” We are fighting for what happened, and why. We are just heartbroken, so heartbroken.”
