Kathleen Genevieve Ledecky (born March 17, 1997) is an American competitive swimmer. She has won six Olympic individual gold medals and 14 World Championships individual gold medals, the most in history for a female swimmer. Ledecky is the world record holder in the women’s 800-, and 1500-meter freestyle (long course), as well as the former world record holder in the women’s 400-meter freestyle (long course). She holds the fastest times ever in the women’s 500-, 1000- and 1650-yard freestyle events.

In total, she has won 42 medals (34 gold, 7 silver and 1 bronze) in major international competitions spanning the Summer Olympics, the World Championships and the Pan Pacific Championships. Ledecky was born and raised in the suburb of Bethesda, Maryland, the daughter of Mary Jane (Hagan) and David Ledecky. His Czech-born grandfather Jaromir Ledecky arrived in New York City as a student on September 8, 1947, later becoming an economist, and in December an Ashkenazi Jew named Berta Ruth Greenwald (Ledecky’s paternal grandmother) in Brooklyn married a woman. 30, 1956, and through him are relatives of Ledecky who died in the Holocaust in Europe.  Ledecky’s mother is of Irish descent. She was raised Catholic.  His uncle John Ledecky is a businessman and co-owner of the NHL team New York Islanders.

Times as a kid

At the age of six, Ledecky began learning swimming, inspired by his brother and his mother, who also swam during his time at the University of New Mexico.
He attended Little Flower School in Bethesda, Maryland before attending Stone Ridge School in Sacred Heart. While in high school, she set the American and US Open records in the 500-yard freestyle as well as broke the high school record for the 200-yard freestyle.
In the summer of 2012, he began training at the Nations Capital Swim Club, where he was initially coached by Yuri Suguyama. After Yuri Sugiyama left the club, he began training under coach Bruce Gemel, who would later guide him through the 2016 Summer Olympics.
After graduating in 2015, he enrolled at Stanford University on a swimming scholarship. She is part of coach Greg Meehan’s Stanford Cardinals women’s swim team.
