Kathleen Genevieve Ledecky (born March 17, 1997) is an American competitive swimmer. She has won six Olympic individual gold medals and 14 World Championships individual gold medals, the most in history for a female swimmer. Ledecky is the world record holder in the women’s 800-, and 1500-meter freestyle (long course), as well as the former world record holder in the women’s 400-meter freestyle (long course). She holds the fastest times ever in the women’s 500-, 1000- and 1650-yard freestyle events.

While most kids her age were enjoying summer break between sophomore and junior year of high school, Ledecky was in London for her first Olympics. The then 15-year-old Ledecky finished first in the 800m freestyle at the Olympic Trials, two seconds ahead of world champion swimmer Kate Ziegler, who earned second place on the team. Ziegler won’t be the only swimmer stunned by the young phenom. At the London Olympic Games, Ledecky finished third in the 800 free heat before winning gold with a time of 8:23.84, the fastest in the field with a time of 4.13 seconds and setting a new American record in the event.
In the time between London and Rio, Ledecky continued to dominate. She set a world record in the 1,500 freestyle in 15:36.53, performing by winning the gold medal at the 2013 FINA World Aquatics Championships. That was not the end of his visit to Barcelona, Spain. Ledecky added gold medals in the 400 free, 800 free and 4×200 free relay, setting a world record in the 800 in 8:13.86. She broke world records in the 800 and 1500 the following year, and in the 400 to establish herself as the sport’s leading distance freestyle swimmer. She added five more gold medals at the 2015 FINA World Aquatics Championships in Kazan, Russia, and added five more gold medals at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships.
