Olympian Katie Archibald has said she tried to save the life of her partner, a Scottish mountain biker who died of cardiac arrest while lying in bed next to her.

Rube Wardell died at the age of 37, just hours after he appeared on TV to discuss his victory at the Scottish MTB XC Championship on Sunday.

Two-time Olympic track cycling champion Archibald tweeted: “I think you heard Raab passed away yesterday morning.

“I still don’t understand what happened; if it’s real, why would he be taken now – so healthy and happy.

“He went into cardiac arrest while we lay in bed. I tried and tried, and the paramedics came in minutes, but his heart stopped and they couldn’t bring him back.

“Mine stopped here. I love him so much and need him here with me. I need him here so badly, but he’s gone. I can’t describe the pain.”

In an emotional post on Twitter earlier today, Archibald said: “I think you heard that Raab passed away yesterday morning.

“I still do not understand what has happened; if it is real; Why would she be taken now – so healthy and happy.

“While we were lying on the bed, he went into cardiac arrest. I tried and tried, and the paramedics came in minutes, but his heart stopped and they couldn’t bring him back.

“Mine stopped with it,” the 28-year-old continued. “I love him so much and need him here with me. I need him here so much, but he’s gone. I can’t describe the pain.”

British Cycling

Archibald of Scotland was a quarter of the British team chasing that won the Olympic gold medal in Rio, and also boasts an impressive collection of World, European and Commonwealth honours.

After a relatively late start to his competitive cycling career, Archibald established himself as one of the world’s leading track endurance riders and became a favorite among British cycling fans.

By the time the Olympic Games in Tokyo were delayed to the summer of 2021, she had earned 50 medals at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games, World and European Championships and UCI Track World Cup meetings. Astonishingly, 33 of them were gold, most in team pursuit, but also titles in individual pursuit, omnium, madison, elimination and points race.

Archibald has also produced strong performances and results in road racing, while brother John is a successful track champion rider. A keen blogger and author, Archibald has also been published in several newspapers and magazines, sharing his humorous thoughts about cycling and life.

Fitness

Archibald had won gold in the individual pursuit as well as silver in the points race on the Gold Coast four years earlier.

Her crash in Glasgow was the latest in a string of injuries since the Tokyo Olympics, where Archibald won Madison gold alongside Laura Kenny.

She was treated on the side of the track after a heavy fall at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, but was able to walk away from the incident.

“I wasn’t as well conditioned in that race as I wanted to be,” she said. “It was the last race in the Omnium and I pulled it together.

“I started out very badly, I didn’t really have legs, but I was very happy with what I did and then I hit the deck and it was all over. I don’t remember it [the accident]. I left , I was conscious but I woke up in a medical suit downstairs.

“By the time I arrived, my mother had somehow got down. She had gotten herself a VIP pass and snared past security and got herself into a medical suit.”
