Karen Chen (born August 16, 1999) is an American figure skater. He is a silver medalist in the team event of the 2022 Olympic Games, a two-time CS US Classic bronze medalist (2016, 2017), Zagreb bronze medalist 2015 CS Golden Spin, 2017 US national champion, 2022 US national silver medalist, and three-time champion. -Time US National Bronze Medalist (2015, 2018, 2021).

Retiring
From a young age, Karen Chen knew she wanted to pursue a career on the ice. She started skating at just 4 years old, and immediately fell in love with the sport. After winning several prestigious competitions and making a name for herself in the world of figure skating, Chen fulfilled her dream of making the 2018 US figure skating team at the Winter Olympics. While many considered him the favorite for Team USA’s victory, Chen placed 11th, and even considered leaving the sport for good after his time at Pyeongchang (NBC Sports). Then, after a near-career-ending injury, enrolled at Cornell University, and facing a global pandemic, Chen felt his love for the sport once again and decided to compete again at the 2022 Winter Olympics. He made it his mission.
Retirement
In fact, Team USA was not going to win gold in the team figure skating event. Sunday’s disappointing performance made it clear.
Two days after three Friday sessions unexpectedly left the Americans in first place by two points, Karen Chen and Vincent Zhou helped give Russia an edge, leaving it unlikely, 45 points for 42. America needs to keep it close in the women’s short program and the men’s free skate to stay within the fault of the Russians. Instead, both Americans stumbled, figuratively and literally.
“I’m definitely disappointed,” Chen said after falling on the triple toe loop, usually a credible jump for him, and finished fifth. Zhou gave his performance a B-minus, perhaps a generous grade given that he bailed on the quadruple jump attempt and finished third. “It wasn’t a lights-out skate, obviously,” he said. “But it wasn’t a disaster. I’m better trained to let a disaster happen.”

Making it to the Olympics is a long, arduous journey and Nathan Chen (no relation to Karen) states that it is his passion for the sport that fuels the entire figure skating team.
“All figure skaters have been doing it since they’re kids,” he said. “It’s amazing to realize that all your work is like ending in this one moment, you know, we all worked really hard to get to where we are.”
