“I thought our men competed at an elite level,” Providence coach Ed Cooley said. “It was a great college basketball game.
“It’s tough. It’s the most connected group ever. It was a special, special, special group. I thought we did our best by the end.”
Noah Horchler swung to the rim and made it 48-47 with 5:49 to play, as the Friars erased a 13-point deficit early in the second half. Kansas responded with a decisive 7–0 run, finally breaking the indomitable spirit shown by Providence through the opening 35 minutes. A three-point inside game from Jalen Wilson and a steal to set up David McCormack for a layoff turned the tide back in favor of the Jayhawks.
“I saw how excited they were,” Wilson said. “They started talking a little bit.”
Kansas became the second team this season to defeat the Friars in a singles game. Villanova managed to pull it off twice – Providence captured their other 16 contests, before being settled by nine points or less and 11.

The Jayhawks have now moved to the Elite Eight where they will play the winner of No. 10 Miami versus No. 11 Iowa State. The Jayhawks swept the Cyclones in Big 12 play this season.
