Kalvin Phillips: Ipswich| Transfer| Deal| Update

Ipswich have signed Sammy Szmodics from Blackburn Rovers and Kelvin Phillips from Manchester City on the eve of their return to the Premier League.

Szmodics, the Championship’s top scorer last season with 27 goals, joined the Tractor Boys on a four-year deal after agreeing a fee of ÂŁ9 million plus add-on bonuses.

England midfielder Phillips, 28, has been signed on a season-long loan.

After a 22-year absence, Ipswich make their top flight debut at home to Liverpool on Saturday (12:30 BST).

Transfer

Ipswich Town have agreed a deal to sign Manchester City midfielder Kelvin Phillips on a season-long loan.

The England international is expected to undergo a medical with the newly-promoted Premier League club on Thursday.

The 28-year-old is understood to have been impressed by the project after discussions with boss Kieran McKenna and chairman Mark Ashton.

It is understood the city will pay a portion of his salary.

The ex-Leeds player has earned more money at Ipswich than many other Premier League clubs.

Deal

Ipswich have agreed a deal with Manchester City for the season-long loan signing of Kelvin Phillips in an attempt to revive his career with the newly promoted club.

The England international is in need of regular football after a disappointing two seasons at City, which also included an unsuccessful loan spell at West Ham this year.

Now he has been given the chance to reboot by Kieran McKenna, who will see his acquisition as an important step in assembling a side that can compete at the highest level.

Phillips is expected to arrive in Ipswich for a medical on Thursday and if the deal is completed on time, he could be in contention for a place in the team to face Liverpool at Portman Road on Saturday. This will be their first Premier League match since 2002 and their first since returning to the top with two consecutive promotions.

Update

Kelvin Phillips has joined Ipswich Town on a season-long loan from Manchester City, the Tractor Boys confirmed on Friday. The 28-year-old midfielder, who spent the latter half of the 2023-24 season on loan at West Ham, is keen to secure regular game time in the Premier League.

Phillips has struggled to find his form at Manchester City following a ÂŁ42million transfer from Leeds United in 2022. He made only 30 appearances under Pep Guardiola. His stint at West Ham was intended to boost his chances for England’s Euro 2024 squad, but it did not go according to plan.

During his time with West Ham, Phillips started three matches and lost possession 49 times in ten league games. On his debut he lost the ball, which led to Dominic Solanke scoring for Bournemouth. Despite these challenges, Phillips is optimistic about his new opportunity at Ipswich.

Phillips expressed his excitement on Ipswich’s club website: “This is a day I’ve been looking forward to for many weeks and I’m very happy to be here. I’ve had some great conversations with the players I love here.”
