Press conference

The chaos following Michigan’s defeat in Wisconsin on Sunday – shouting, pushing and punching – began with a gesture that heralded inaction: a timeout.

Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard called it out and Michigan head coach Juan Howard did not appreciate it. Howard told the guard what began as a postgame handshake line and ended as a brawl on Kohl’s Center Court.

An ugly scene that would surely result in suspension, including one for Howard, went down like this:

With 15 seconds left and Wisconsin leading 76-61, the Badgers struggled to get the ball across the half court. After a Michigan defender took the ball out of bounds, the guard called a timeout. He described Michigan’s defense to the full-court press at the time. Howard said it was only a full-court face-off. In this case, it is a distinction without a distinction. The match between the two teams went on till the end.

The guard said a referee approached him and reminded him that if he called a timeout, his team would get reset to the 10 seconds needed to advance the ball past the half court. And so he called out one who didn’t want his players involved in the game—two of whom are walk-ons; All of whom entered Sunday’s game for the first time with 48 seconds remaining – in poor condition.

Post game

Desmond Howard defends Juwan Howard after post-game incident with Greg Gardo
There was a lot of fireworks at Sunday’s meeting between Wisconsin and Michigan. Both sides even played a game of basketball!

Tension was high during the handshake line at the end of the game.

Michigan coach Juan Howard swinging a Wisconsin coach also led to a scuffle.

Later, Howard described how he felt it was “unnecessary” for Wisconsin coach Greg Gard to touch him at the handshake line. It escalated the whole event, per Howard.

Subsequently, Desmond Howard addressed the incident. The former Michigan star and co-host of ESPN’s College Gameday defended Howard.

“I saw Juwan walk away and the Wisconsin coach put his hand on him to stop him,” Howard wrote on Twitter. “First mistake. Then a (assistant) coach poured himself in and said something that made things worse. Let the bosses be the boss and play their position. Second mistake.”

Suspension

Juwan Howard is late to the handshake line. Other Michigan personnel, players, and coaches filed through this vain charioteer as determined, but he was nowhere to be seen. And then he arrived as Greg Gard of Wisconsin went all the way to the front of the Wolverine bench.

There was a lesson in it, people: It’s better to be late than not.

If Howard wanted to be angry about how the final 15 seconds of his team’s defeat to the Badgers developed, well, it was his right (even if he was wrong). However, the only way to handle it was to go away.

Instead, as the two coaches intersected, Howard extended his right hand to move the guard’s hand and, at some point, in the guard’s words, “I’ll remember that.” The guard placed his left hand on Howard’s right elbow and abruptly stopped him, later explaining that he tried to explain the situation that caused Howard’s anger. Howard reacted to the grab by holding the ball in front of the guard’s pullover.
