Trade:
On July 31, 2016, the Indians traded Sheffield along with Clint Frazier, Ben Heller and J. P. Feyereisen to the New York Yankees for Andrew Miller. He finished the 2016 season with the Tampa Yankees of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League, where he posted a 10–6 record with a 3.09 ERA.
The Seattle Mariners and New York Yankeesmade a blockbuster trade on Monday night. The Mariners sent ace James Paxton to New York in exchange for three prospects: lefty Justus Sheffield, outfielder Dom Thompson-Williams, and righty Erik Swanson.
Gary Sheffield:
Because of his combination of skill, sportswriter Joe Posnanski wrote, “I can’t imagine there has ever been a scarier hitter to face.” His first manager Tom Trebelhorn said, “Gary can turn on a 38-caliber bullet.” He is the nephew of Dwight Gooden.
Sheffield: In high school, I just laced up the spikes and I went out there and played. Even a little bit last year, I didn’t have that much of a routine. As the season went on, I started learning more and more things about what I could do to get ready, what I needed to do, not just sitting around and waiting for that fifth day. I’ve learned more about the weight room and the training room, about prep work. I’m still working on my routine, it’s gradually getting there.
Splits:
After a series of savvy trades and putting together what many would argue was the best Draft of the year in June, the Mariners’ rebuild continued on its already promising path.
That path became an express lane when the club fielded the Majors’ second-youngest roster (only the Tigers were younger) — featuring many of the prospects acquired by trades and recent draftees such as Justus Sheffield, Justin Dunn, Evan White and Kyle Lewis — and stayed in the playoff hunt up to the final week of the season.
