Justin Brooks Verlander (born February 20, 1983) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has also played in MLB for the Detroit Tigers. From Mankin-Sabot in Virginia, Verlander attended Old Dominion University (ODU) and played college baseball for the Monarchs. He broke the Monarchs and Colonial Athletic Association career records for strikeouts. At the 2003 Pan American Games, Verlander helped lead the United States national team to a silver medal.

Triple crown
While Matt Kemp decreased his bid for the Triple Crown this season, two pitchers completed the Triple Crown’s pitching. Justin Verlander and Clayton Kershaw both led their league in wins, ERAs and strikeouts.
However, like hitting the Triple Crown, the pitching Triple Crown has one stat that does a poor job of measuring pitching performance: wins.
One only needs to watch Felix Hernandez’s 2010 season or Russell Ortiz’s 2003 season. Since wins are such a poor measure of pitching performance (not to say that ERA and Ks are correct, but at least they depend more on the pitcher), let’s replace win with WHIP.
The question then becomes whether Verlander and Kershaw have achieved this version of the Triple Crown pitching and who has claimed that title in the past.

The pitcher worked several jams out of his five innings, keeping the Phillies scoreless after a leadoff home run by Kyle Schwarber in the first innings.
“It was tough for me,” Justin said. “[I] was a little out of sync to start, but I was able to create the pitches I needed. What really did click the slider for me, the off-speed stuff.”
Verlander scored four runs and gave four hits but also hit a six. The Astros bullpen again won 3-2, allowing the 39-year-old right-handed batsman to win his first career in the World Series.
“After last night, I think [The Phillies’] game plan completely changed, where they were like, ‘Let’s try to get to the top of the fastball. We know Justin throws a lot of them. Is.’ And they were trying to reach the heater,” Justin said. “So the second time through the lineup, I was able to go up in speed a little bit more. … My last start, off-speed was terrible. This time it clicked. The slider was there, the curveball was there and got some Huge out with those pitches. So just felt great.”
