If examined closely, Verlander’s words make it seem as if his heart was always in Houston, even after signing with the New York Mets in the offseason. The three-time Cy Young and former MVP was traded back to Houston at the trade deadline, with the Mets already out of postseason contention.

Verlander had only been with the Mets for a few months, making his return to Houston completely seamless. But watching this speech, no one would probably guess that Verlander wasn’t in Houston for the start of the 2023 season.

The 40-year-old joined the Mets on a two-year, $86 million contract after winning his second World Series with the Astros. He also won his third Cy Young last season while posting a 1.84 .

But it’s clear that even after leaving in free agency, Verlander’s heart remained with Houston and his World Series teammates. Now, the future Hall-of-Famer is back with the Astros and ready to win another ring with the defending World Series champions, as evidenced by his foul language speech after the game.

Verlander was not used in Game 4 against the Twins, but he would start Game 1 of the ALCS against the Rangers.

Speech

Pitcher Justin Verlander gave a historic speech that Houston Astros fans will never forget after the team advanced to the American League Championship Series on Wednesday night.

The Astros were in full celebration mode after eliminating the Minnesota Twins in the American League Division Series. The Astros defeated the Twins 3–2 to win the series 3–1.

The team is now headed to their seventh-straight ALCS, second only to the Atlanta Braves run in the 1990s that saw them appear in eight consecutive League Championship Series appearances.

During the post-game celebration, Verlander recounted the team’s ALCS appearance after being called out by manager Dusty Baker.

“Okay, okay, that’s it. You know, it’s one of those seasons. Nothing went right quickly for us. We struggled with injuries. Yes, we’re grinding. “I wasn’t going to be here at all,” Verlander said. “I’m happy to be back. Yes. It’s seven o’clock. It’s seven o’clock. Ok. Don’t take it lightly. At seven o’clock, everyone cracks these _____ (champagne bottles). One. Two. Three. Four. five. Six. Seven!”

Before the star pitcher could finish his count, the Astros passed out their champagne bottles, drenching everyone.
