Born in Perth, Western Australia, Langer excelled in cricket from an early age, representing Western Australia at an early age, as well as representing the Australia Under-19 team. He also won a scholarship to the Australian Cricket Academy at the Australian Institute of Sports in 1990. Langer made his first-class debut for Western Australia during the 1991–92 Sheffield Shield, and after good form at the state level, made his Test debut. The following season for Australia at the age of 22 during the 1992–93 tour of the West Indies. Although maintaining his place in the side, he struggled for form, and made only sporadic appearances for Australia until selection for Australia’s 1998–99 tour of Pakistan, in which he scored his maiden Test century. Establishing himself at number three in the batting order, Langer retained the role until the 2001 Ashes series. After being injured for the first four Tests, he replaced Michael Slater as Matthew Hayden’s opening partner for the final Test and scored a century in Australia’s innings victory. It was the first of three centuries in consecutive matches that secured Langer’s position at the top of the order.

Prospect

Luke Voight’s tenure with the organization has come to an end, after the New York Yankees re-signed Anthony Rizzo as their first baseman.

The Yankees announced Friday that they are trading Wyatt to the San Diego Padres for right-handed pitching prospect Justin Lang.

New York signed Rizzo on Thursday to a two-year deal. He hit .249/.340/.428 in 49 games with the Yankees after being received from the Chicago Cubs before the trade deadline.

Bringing Rizzo back added to the crowded infield rotation for the Yankees. They also have Josh Donaldson, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Gleber Torres and DJ Lemahieu. Giancarlo Stanton is likely to be the primary designated hitter in the Bronx this season.

This left Voight, who is confined to first base, or DH, as the odd man. The 31-year-old made a solid comeback for the Yankees in a potential trade due to the status of his contract.

Baseball

As Luke Voight drove down to Bradenton from the Tampa area on Friday morning, a number of thoughts flashed through his head.

Slugger knew his days with the Yankees were numbered due to the return of his friend Anthony Rizzo, but with his current team ready to play in their spring opener against the Pirates, he dressed in a New York blue suit. Was hoping to do and move on. A ground again after battling an injured 2021 season.

He didn’t get that chance, as the Yankees traded him to the Padres about an hour before the first pitch, receiving 20-year-old pitching prospect Justin Lang in return.
