BLACKSBURG (WSLS10) — It’s less than six months since Justin Fuente was announced the new head coach at Virginia Tech. Now he and his family are adjusting to life in their new home in Blacksburg.
After coaching their final game in Memphis, Coach Fuente and his wife, Jenny, decided it was time to tell the big news to their three daughters, that they were moving to Virginia Tech. They decided on the right way to tell the girls about the move, using the famous entrance tradition of the Hokies – Enter the Sandman.
“Justin took out the iPad and we showed him the entrance, Enter the Sandman in the stadium,” says Jenny. “And Justin said, ‘Isn’t that cool?’ And our oldest said, ‘Yeah! Yes! Yes, it’s really cool!’ And Justin said, “This will be our new team.” She was really excited.”
Coach Fuente and his family have heard the song played at other sporting events, but haven’t felt the full impact of the jump of over 66,000 fans at Lane Stadium. Jenny says she and the girls were on their way to soccer practice recently when they heard Virginia Tech’s anthem at the softball field.

Virginia Tech isn’t looking forward to the off-season for a head coach change. Athletic director Whit Babcock announced Tuesday that the varsity and head coach Justin Fuente have “mutually agreed to separate.” Jesse Price has been installed as interim head coach for the rest of the 2021 season.
Fuente was in his sixth season as head coach of the Hokies, replacing longtime coach Frank Beamer. He set a 43–31 record in six seasons at the university.
Virginia Tech went 10-4 in Fuente’s first season, winning the 2016 Belk Bowl to close the season. Their teams would earn three more bids in a row, but lost all three games in a season ranging from good to mediocre. Since the 10-4 season in 2016, Virginia Tech has finished with records of 9-4, 6-7, 8-5 and 5-6. They are currently 5-5 and registering a 48-17 win over Duke.
