When Bears head coach Matt Nagy was asked about quarterback Andy Dalton on Monday, he said the veteran remains the No. 1 quarterback as long as he is healthy enough to play.

Dalton is set for full practice Wednesday, but he is no longer the No. 1 quarterback in Chicago. Negi told reporters at his press conference on Wednesday that Justin Fields will start against the Raiders this week and will continue to be the starting quarterback.

“He’s grown to the point. He’s earned it. He’s worked hard. And now he has this opportunity,” Nagy said via Chris Emma of 670 The Score.

It was always a matter of time before a first-round pick overtook Dalton to become the team’s starter, and Dalton’s knee injury allowed Fields to show a two-plus game what he could do to the lineup. Their first start was a nightmare, but things were better in last Sunday’s win, giving Lions and Fields a chance to grow at work.

When you think of Justin Fields’ greatest strengths and where he has led him today, a few things may come to mind. His arm strength, his mobility, his leadership. Yes, yes, we all know that. Obviously all of those things contributed to his success, but what is the one thing that really changed his life? Switch to a vegetarian diet? Titles and accolades? his family? OK, I can’t really argue with that one, but what I’m really talking about is Uno Fields – who I think more than qualifies as part of his family.

Starter

Justin Fields is the Bears’ starting quarterback on Sunday and beyond.

Coach Matt Nagy announced Wednesday that Fields “has done everything to show us that he is up to the occasion.”

Negi said the rookie quarterback had nothing less than an injury, which would send Fields back to the bench.

“It’s Justin’s time,” he said.

Veteran Andy Dalton, who suffered a bone injury in Week 2 of his left knee, will be in practice throughout Wednesday and will be backup against the Raiders on Sunday.

Negi delivered his verdict to both the quarterbacks on Tuesday. He said talks with Dalton were difficult. Fields, he said, was generally stoic when Negi told him.

Predictions

It’s time for my annual Bears season prediction column, which is usually in the general ballpark of actual results, sometimes spot on, and sometimes deserving of endless harassment by my teammates in Halas Hall (Watch: 2019 in my 13-3 prediction).

This is my 11th year on Beer Beat and one of the things I learned about predictions is that you have to put valid thought, research and logic into making them.

And then you have to prepare to be wrong right away.

Take them seriously at your own risk as both a predictor and a consumer. Games are fun. Predictions are part of what makes them fun.

With that in mind, let’s jump in with a totally boring bear prediction for 2021

reaction

The Bears officially named rookie quarterback Justin Fields as the team’s starter in Sunday’s game against the Browns, who were expected to suffer a knee injury from Andy Dalton.

Dalton suffered a bone spur, which he currently has “week-by-week”. Matt Nagy doesn’t think Dalton will land on injured reserve, a good sign that he could be out for 1-2 games.

With Fields making his first NFL debut on Sunday, he has an opportunity to make a case for becoming the team’s permanent starter over the course of the next few weeks.
