William Rioli (Jr. Rioli since August 2022 and previously known as Willie Rioli) (born 4 June 1995) is a professional Australian rules footballer who plays for the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was drafted by the West Coast Eagles with his third selection and fifty-second overall in the 2016 national draft. He made his debut in the second round of the 2018 season in a fifty-one point victory against the Western Bulldogs at the Etihad Stadium. Coming from the Rioli family, he is the first cousin of Dean Rioli (Esendon Football Club), Cyril Rioli (Hawthorne Football Club) and Ronnie Burns (on his mother’s side), the first cousin once being the current Richmond Football Club player Daniel. Name change
Rioli has endured a tough stop-start in the 2022 season after returning to the sport for the first time since a win over Essendon in the elimination finals of the West Coast in 2019.
After serving a two-year ban for tampering with a urine sample, Rioli made an immediate impact in Round 1 as he clashed heavily with Sun’s rival Matt Rowell.
After going to the tribunal to plead his case, Rioli had his one-match ban lifted.
But as he found form for the Eagles, Rioli suffered a hamstring injury, leaving him to miss five games.
The club had to take a gradual approach with the Premiership before returning for Round 14.
Following the tragic demise of his father in July, Rioli was given an indefinite leave from the club to return home to the Northern Territory.
He missed three weeks before making his way once again to the West Coast’s line-up.
He then missed a round 22 loss to Fremantle after returning home for his father’s funeral.
But the 27-year-old has been named for a final round match with Geelong as one of four changes to the squad.
Rioli is out of contract at the end of this season.
Since his debut in 2018, he has played 50 games for the club, scoring 60 goals.

His second round pick, number 26, was traded to the Eagles during the previous year’s trading period.
Rioli was negotiating a new deal with the Eagles, but those talks were put on hold in July when his father, Willie Rioli Snr., died of a heart attack at the age of 50.

The Eagles are keen to retain Rioli, who was a key member of the 2018 Premiership squad two years after being drafted from SANFL club Glenelg.
The goalkeeper played 38 games in 2018 and 2019 and then served a two-year ban for tampering with a urine sample twice.
Rioli scored 14 goals in 13 games in his return to the AFL this season, moving up the field several times to play as a midfielder.

Rioli passed his ban for tampering with a urine sample twice. He was also placed on a good behavior bond in 2021 after pleading guilty to cannabis possession.
“Many players are owed nothing to football clubs. This is a business deal. It’s literally a handshake, I’ve fulfilled my contract. Too deep here…,” Ellis said at Triple M.
“I feel like he’s had a baby… he’s been fine and is really being taken care of.”
Rioli was also looked after by the club in July when his father, Willie Rioli Sr., died of a heart attack.
Dad
West Coast forward Junior Rioli will be known by a new name soon after his father passes away.
The move is in keeping with Aboriginal cultural practices and is in relation to Rioli’s father – after whom he was named.
Rioli Sr. died suddenly last month at his home in the Tiwi Islands. He himself was a North Zone football legend, who starred for Darwin powerhouse St Mary’s before landing in South Fremantle and also spent time at Hawthorne.
The change is effective immediately and will be in effect for the next 12 months.
“Following the passing of Sr. W. Rioli, we are referring to our Premiership as ‘Junior’ Rioli for the next 12 months,” the club said in a statement.
