Nagelsmann was just 28 when he was appointed as Hoffenheim’s head coach in February 2016, taking over from veteran tactician Hugh Stevens, who had resigned due to health reasons. Nagelsmann was already scheduled to take charge later that summer, but he pushed his arrival to fill the void. The club was ranked 17th and was set to go down at the time, but it picked them up safely by the end of the campaign.
Although Nagelsmann is the youngest permanent head coach in Bundesliga history, he is not the youngest to oversee a Bundesliga match. On 23 October 1976, Bernd Stober took charge of Saarbrücken in an interim capacity for his visit to Cologne at the age of 24. Die Mollschder lost the game 5–1.
Nagelsmann later made European history when he led Leipzig to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League shortly after his 33rd birthday. He is the youngest coach to reach the last four, surpassing Didier Deschamps’ previous record of 35 years, and did so by beating Atlético Madrid and Diego Simeone, who made his senior debut as a player that year. The year Nagelsmann was born. It is also worth remembering that he is actually a month younger than Lionel Messi.

Hansi Flick’s Bayern Munich set a new benchmark to win at Germany’s already most successful club, claiming seven trophies in just 18 months. The winning spirit continues under successor Julian Nagelsmann, but how do the two teams compare after a season under the youth strategy?
Bundesliga.com Take an in-depth look at what two of Germany’s top coaches have done as record champions…
Bayern were fourth when Flick took charge in November 2019 and – despite starting with a 4-0 win over Borussia Dortmund – will move to seventh in December. But then they would go on to win 19 of the final 20 league games (plus a draw) as they marched up to Meisterschle. The Bavarians won every match in their UEFA Champions League and DFB Cup campaigns to claim the second treble in their history.
Flick’s only full season in charge saw him win the Bundesliga again, with three games to go. The holders also won the group stage of the Champions League, but suffered a loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals. Their DFB Cup defense also ended in surprising circumstances, with a shootout elimination for Holstein Kiel in the second round.
