After five years in Pittsburgh, JuJu Smith-Schuster is heading to Kansas City. The 2018 Pro Bowl receiver has inked a one-year, $10.75 million deal with the Chiefs, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
A free agent last season, Smith-Schuster turned down offers from the Chiefs and Ravens to sign a one-year deal to stay with the Steelers. Smith-Schuster’s last game with the Steelers came against his new team. Nearly three months after undergoing shoulder surgery, he caught five passes to defeat the Chiefs at the end of the season for Pittsburgh in the wild card round.
A 2017 second-round pick out of USC, Smith-Schuster quickly appeared on the scene during his first season at Pittsburgh. After scoring eight touchdowns as a rookie, Smith-Schuster set a career high during his second season with 111 receptions for 1,426 yards. In 2020, Smith-Schuster caught a career-high nine touchdowns while helping the Steelers return to the playoffs after a two-year absence. He credits coach Mike Tomlin as one of the main reasons why he decided to stay at Pittsburgh last season instead of signing elsewhere.
“I love that guy,” Smith-Schuster said of Tomlin, who set an NFL record this season by starting his head coaching career with 15 consecutive non-losing seasons. “He was another reason why I stayed in Pittsburgh another year. Playing for that kind of guy is what you want to play for. He’s one of those coaches that if you mess up, you don’t him.” It’s like you don’t want to bring home bad grades because you don’t want to disappoint your parents because you care about that person so much.”

When news broke that the Kansas City Chiefs were signing former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster to a one-year, $10.75 million deal, the numbers made sense. Despite being relatively cap-tight, the Chiefs could free up the space needed with a procedural Patrick Mahomes restructuring, and the roughly $11 million a year deal for Smith-Schuster wasn’t a shocker.
Incentives are common in NFL contracts, offering players bonuses for good performances and giving teams some protection from a player who may be disappointed on a new deal. But Smith-Shuster’s exclusive position may have brought a unique wrinkle to the Chiefs’ deal with their new receiver.
First, a quick disclaimer: This is speculative. From here on out, we’re just connecting the dots without giving a complete picture, at the time of publication of this article. But, if my tinfoil hat theory has any merit, the Chiefs did have some fun (yes, fun!) with the Smith-Schuster contract.
