Joshua Earl Patrick Phillips (born March 17, 1984) is an American convicted of murder as a child. In November 1998, when he was 14, Phillips murdered his 8-year-old friend and neighbor, Maddie Clifton. The following year, he was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Phillips said that he killed Clifton to stop crying while he was playing, when he was accidentally hit by a baseball, and feared punishment from his abusive father. Although elements of Phillips’ story are disputed, officials involved in his prosecution have since expressed remorse over the seriousness of his sentence. Phillips is eligible for sentencing again in 2023.
