Raiders running back Josh Jacobs has worn jersey number 28 in all four of his seasons in the NFL. He wanted to switch to his college number 8 last season, until he learned he would have to pay the NFL $3.5 million for the remaining list of Jacobs’ 28 jerseys.

“So I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m not going to do that,'” Jacobs said, via Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Jacobs will not have to pay for the switch this season. So, after returning to the team this week after signing his one-year deal worth up to $12 million, Jacobs decided to return to his Alabama number.

It’s a number that makes him “really feel like a superhero.”

“It’s just that number that I think brings out something different in me,” Jacobs said. “Even in college, I feel like I took a jump in that number. So, I mean it would be fun to see what I could do with it and just try to make it a major thing.

Jacobs led the league in touches (393), yards from scrimmage (2,053) and rushing yards (1,653) last season, so he’ll have to do a lot to top that.

Did change his number

As he announced in May, Jacobs will wear No. 8 in the 2023 season after wearing No. 28 on his jersey during his first four seasons with the Raiders. “Growing up, I think that was always the number that caught my eye,” Jacobs said last week.

Ethnicity

Jacobs is of Filipino descent from Angeles City through his grandmother, and has a portrait of her tattooed on his left arm.
