The Bronx Bombers’ quiet season has come to an abrupt end, as the Yankees and Twins combined on a blockbuster five-player deal. Third baseman Josh Donaldson, infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and catcher Ben Rorthwaite are all headed for the Yankees, while the Twins will pick up catcher Gary Sanchez and infielder Gio Ursella. According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the $50MM owed on Donaldson’s contract is still being fully absorbed by the Yankees. To make it to their 40-man roster, New York placed reliever Zack Britton on a 60-day injured list.

Josh Donaldson has a five-team no-trade clause, although it is not known whether the Yankees were one of five clubs on his list, or if he waived his clause to move to New York. The Yankees will pay a $2MM assignment bonus due to the trade, and upon transfer, the $16MM club option on Donaldson for 2024 now becomes a mutual option with a $6MM buyout instead of an $8MM buyout.

Contract

Fresh from bounce-back 2019, Josh Donaldson has signed a four-year deal with the Minnesota Twins, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinand. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports said the contract is worth $92 million and could be increased to $100 million with a fifth-year option.

The 34-year-old spent the 2019 season with the Atlanta Braves on a one-year contract. After battling hard with injuries in 2018, Josh Donaldson made a comeback last season as one of the Braves’ best players. He scored 37 home runs at .259/.379/.521 and scored 94 runs, earning him the nomination of Comeback Player of the Year. Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos told reporters he wanted to keep Donaldson but acknowledged it could be tough to compete financially.

The biggest name here is Donaldson’s. The three-time All-Star won the 2015 AL MVP and took two other top-five spots in MVP voting. He hit .247/.352/.475 (127 ops) in 135 games for the Twins last season with 26 doubles, 26 homers, 72 RBIs, 73 runs and 3.2 wars. He has been hit somewhat by injuries over the years and will never hit for a high average again, but he is still a middle-order power hitter. Josh donaldson could have hit between Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton or immediately after both.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Donaldson is still owed $50 million by 2023 and the Yankees are taking it all.
