Edmonton Oilers winger Josh Archibald is out indefinitely due to myocarditis, coach Dave Tippett said on Sunday. The coach also said that tests show Archibald contracted COVID-19 this summer.

Archibald had to quarantine for 14 days after arriving in Edmonton from the United States in early September because he is uninsured. During that half of that quarantine period, Archibald had a serious viral infection.

“Coming out of his quarantine, he tried skating for a few days and just didn’t feel right,” Tippett said.

Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle. It has been linked to COVID-19, especially among athletes, and increases the chances of sudden cardiac death. Current Oilers goaltender Alex Stallock was diagnosed with the same condition in November and is not expected to play this season.

Tippett said Archibald would conduct more tests this week. He cannot get the COVID-19 vaccine yet.
