Burroughs hails from the Sicklerville section of Winslow Township, New Jersey. When he was in elementary school, he brought home a wrestling flyer and became the first member of his family to wrestle at the age of five. He attended Winslow Township High School, where he was a three-sport athlete, wrestling, playing American football, and running. He dreamed of playing in the NFL as a wide receiver, but dropped it to focus on wrestling, weighing 130 pounds as a freshman.
As a wrestler, he became a three-time district champion, two-time regional champion, state (NJSIAA) champion and NHSCA national champion in his senior year. He had 115 wins and 20 losses.

In freestyle, he was the 2012 Olympic gold medalist, the reigning and five-time world champion (eight-time medalist), three-time Pan American Games gold medalist, four-time Pan American champion and four-time champion. In Monday’s final, Burroughs defeated Iranian Mohamed Nokhodi 5–1. Burroughs took an early 3–0 lead with a double leg takedown followed by another double take.
The gold medal was awarded to Burroughs by John Smith’s U.S. The freestyle adds up to the record with a combined total of six world and Olympic gold medals. Burroughs had previously won world titles in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017 in addition to his Olympic victories in London.
After Burroughs failed to qualify for this year’s Tokyo Olympics, there was speculation that he would retire. Instead, he moved from the 74kg category to the 79kg category.
In the 70kg, fellow former husker James Green lost 6–5 to Azerbaijan’s Turan Bayramov in the quarterfinals and was eliminated from the competition.
Burroughs’ medal was the second gold of the day for the United States. Former Omaha scoot and Iowa wrestler Thomas Gilman defeated Alireza Sarlak of Iran in a 57kg championship match.

Now, at 33, the question of how he’ll do in the cage is one of the last questions unanswered for Burroughs — and it’s also one he’s starting to seriously consider.
