Background:
On the stage 20 time trial, Vingegaard finished third, taking 25 seconds on the champion elect. Of course, he acknowledges Pogacar’s five-minute buffer didn’t necessitate a gut-busting effort reminiscent of last year, but it’s maybe given him “a bit of confidence for the future that he’s not unbeatable”.
Vingegaard says he likes his privacy in the final press conference of the race, but understands there isn’t a lot of that to be found at the Tour. The heady heights of Tour fame and almost-glory are a departure from his origins.
Bike:
This is how this particular Tour de France champion was born.
Last year I bumped into Vingegaard’s parents at the start of a stage on their son’s way to sealing a surprise second overall in the Tour de France.
They were each draped in a large Danish flag and were so small that they were clearly not the people who produced Mads Pedersen.
Before the start of stage nine to Tignes, in Cluses, I bump into Vingegaard’s parents. How is it possible to spot two middle-aged Danish people I’ve never met before?
Child:
Jonas Vingegaard, a well-known Danish cyclist, has committed to race for UCI WorldTeam Team Jumbo-Visma. Despite being a motorcyclist, he has a daughter and is married.
The enormous red and white-cross flag draped over their shoulders, and their diminutive stature indicates they’re not here to support Mads Pedersen.
Fish:
Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) has spoken about his part-time work in a fish auction and a fish factory to earn some extra cash during his pursuit of a cycling career.
The 25-year-old is closing in on his first Tour de France title after moving 3’26” ahead of Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) heading into the final competitive stage on Saturday, and explained how he ended up working with fellow cyclist Michael Valgren at the plant after leaving school.
