It hasn’t been a good season for the Texas Rangers. His record has been poor, his hitting has been terrible and his pitching has not been that good either.

But as Fangraphs noted today, there is one area where the Rangers are running above and beyond every other team in MLB.

As Justin Choi on Fangraph notes, both Jose Trevino and Jonah Heim have been among the best catchers in baseball this year. That combination means the Rangers have been far and away the best framing team in MLB in 2021.

Rangers place a heavy emphasis on defense with their catchers, and in particular, what we tend to think of as “soft”, less measurable aspects of the catch – game calling, pitcher handling, and so on. Framing has generally been one of those skills, although it’s something we can only measure now, due to the availability of pitch f/x data.

Trevino has been seen as an elite defender throughout his time as a professional, and Heim’s defense was said to be a force to be reckoned with when Rangers acquired him from Oakland this past off-season. I don’t know if his defensive abilities outweigh his offensive issues – Heim currently has 67 WRC, while 49 WRC – but the framing numbers so far suggest he is extremely strong at that particular skill.

Of course, robo-amps are coming soon, which would make the framing capability controversial. However, there will still be a demand for catchers with strong pitching handling skills, and so even if the framing goes away, Trevino and Heim will still be seen as having enough defensive value to be valuable.
