John Earl Madden (April 10, 1936 – December 28, 2021) was an American football coach and sports commentator in the National Football League (NFL). He served as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to 1978, which led to him winning eight playoff appearances, seven division titles, seven AFL/AFC Championship Game appearances, and the franchise’s first Super Bowl title in Super Bowl XI. Having never had a losing season, Madden has the highest win percentage among NFL head coaches, having coached 100 games.

The NFL said he died “unexpectedly” but did not provide further details.
Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006, Madden brought unbridled enthusiasm and a sense of fun to NFL games during a three-decade broadcast career. He was a master of onomatopoeia, using words such as “boom,” “whoop” and “doink” to interpret football plays to audiences.
The son of an auto mechanic, Madden appealed to fans as an exponent of America’s most popular sports league—and as an advertising pitchman for various products such as beer, hardware stores, and foot fungus medicine.

Madden’s skills as a head coach earned him a bronze bust in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006. He retired from coaching in 1979 with a regular season coaching record of 103–32–7 and a zero losing season with the Oakland Raiders. Per Pro Football Focus, Madden’s .759 winning percentage is second only to Guy Chamberlin.
In 10 seasons as head coach, Madden led the Raiders to the playoffs eight times, five of them against the Pittsburgh Steelers. His five consecutive meetings are an NFL record.
“There is no rivalry in football between the Oakland Raiders led by John Madden and the Pittsburgh Steelers of the ’70s,” Harris wrote on Twitter following Madden’s death on December 28.

A public memorial service for the late John Madden, former Oakland Raiders and Hall of Fame coach of the legendary broadcaster, is scheduled for February 15, 2022.
