He was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League (NFL) for ten seasons (1969–1978), and led them to a championship in Super Bowl XI (1977). After retiring from coaching, he worked as a color commentator for NFL broadcasts until 2009, for which he won 16 Sports Emmy Awards.

John Madden was born on 10 April 1936 in Austin, Minnesota. To pursue work opportunities, his father moved the family to California to find a job as an auto mechanic. John was still young at the time, and he spent most of his youth growing up in a small town south of San Francisco. After enrolling in Catholic school, he then went to Jefferson High School. During his time in high school, John Madden quickly became a high performing member of the football team. John was a talented, versatile young athlete who showed promise in both offensive and defensive positions. He also proved to be a talented baseball player.

In 2006, Madden was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in recognition of his coaching career. He is also known for the long-running Madden NFL video game series, which he named, supported and fronted since 1988. Madden worked as a color analyst for all four major networks: CBS (1979–1993), Fox (1994–2001), ABC (2002–2005), and NBC (2006–2008). Madden retired from broadcasting after the 2008 NFL season. He also wrote several books and worked as a commercial pitchman for various products and retailers.

Madden’s statue sits alongside other great coaches including contemporaries such as Chuck Knoll, Tom Landry, Hank Straum, Paul Brown, Bud Grant, and Don Shula. It also sits alongside a statue of Madden’s coaching idol, Vince Lombardi, who Madden coached as an assistant to the Oakland staff during Green Bay’s victory in Super Bowl II, Lombardi’s final game on the sidelines.
