The NFL will hold a moment of silence before all of its Week 17 games on Sunday to honor Hall of Fame coach and broadcaster John Madden.

Madden died Tuesday at the age of 85.

“As you know, the NFL lost a true legend with the passing of John Madden on Tuesday,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wrote in a memo distributed to teams earlier this week. “To help honor his legacy, we ask that each home team observe a moment of silence in his memory just before the start of the game in Week 17.”

There will be a moment of silence before the national anthem is played.

Madden was only 32 when Raiders owner Al Davis hired him to coach the franchise in 1969. He led Oakland to a 103-32-7 regular season record and won the Super Bowl during the ’76 season before moving to the broadcasting booth in ’78.

NFL

Madden NFL (known as John Madden Football until 1994) is an American football video game series developed by EA Tiburon for EA Sports. It is named after the now deceased Pro Football Hall of Fame coach and commentator John Madden, and it had sold more than 130 million copies by 2018.[1] It is also the only officially licensed National Football League (NFL) video game series, and it has influenced many players and coaches of the physical sport. Among the series’ features are detailed playbooks and player statistics and voice commentary in the style of a real NFL television broadcast. As of 2013 the franchise has generated over $4 billion in sales.

On Sunday, as the NFL honored the late John Madden with a moment of silence at each of its home stadiums, legendary Cowboys fullback Daryl Johnson literally flaunted his respect for the iconic coach and broadcaster up his sleeve.

Coming back from a commercial break in the third quarter of Fox’s early afternoon Buccaneers-Jets telecast, the network played a short video montage of moments from Madden’s remarkable football career. At the conclusion of that tribute, viewers were treated to a 1992 clip of Madden, introducing Johnston as a member of his hand-picked “All-Madden team” for that season.

Johnston wore a commemorative sweatshirt from that admiration as cameras joined him and play-by-play partner Chris Myers in the booth, and the longtime Cowboys star spent a moment sharing how Madden had a bearing on him and his career.

John Madden actually played football at a professional level. However, his career as a player was short-lived.

According to CBS Sports, he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles with the 244th overall pick of the 1958 draft.

However, Madden didn’t even get to play in regular season games. He reportedly suffered a knee injury during rookie training camp, and his time in the NFL essentially ended when it happened. During rehabilitation for the injury, Madden spent time watching films with Norm van Broecklin.

Van Brocklin, the still-reigning record holder for passing yards in a game, taught Madden much of what he knew. According to his account of the latter, Van Broecklin gave him “the greatest education” he had ever had.
