John Cooper of the Tampa Bay Lightning isn’t sure there should be coaches challenging goals under the NHL’s video review system.
“I’m a believer – and I don’t know if I’m in the minority on this – but I don’t know if it should be in our hands,” Cooper said after Tampa Bay’s 6-2 win. Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals which reduced the series to the Colorado Avalanche 2–1. “If it’s either onside or offside, I don’t know why I have to make that decision when the stakes are so high.”
On Monday night, the Lightning successfully challenged a first-period goal by Colorado winger Valery Nichushkin. Video replays showed avalanche defender Bowen Byram leading the puck out of the attacking area and then back to the blue line, making it offside.
The Lightning Bench did not immediately signal for a coach’s challenge and there was considerable delay as they looked from different angles on the bench.
“It was probably three times the length we usually get,” said Colorado coach Jared Bednar.
