The deal, the largest guaranteed contract in MLB history, crushed the $116.5 million, nine-year deal signed by Ken Griffey Jr. in 2000 to become the largest contract in franchise history to date. It will pay the six-time All-Star first baseman $22.5 million a year until 2024 when the Gold Glove and MVP winner turns 41.
Playing for the Dayton Dragons, the Reds’ rookie-level ally of the Class A Midwest League, he scored 26 doubles and 14 home runs with a batting average of .302.
Voto returned in 2006 with the best season of his minor league career. Playing for the Chattanooga Lookouts of the Class AA Southern League, he improved his batting average to .319 and scored 46 doubles and 22 home runs.
In 2012, Joey Votto signed a 10-year, $225 million contract extension with the Reds, which runs through the 2024 season.
The deal included two years that remained on his previous contract and increased the total value of the contract to 12 years and $251.5 million – the longest active deal in baseball at the time.
As of 2021, Joy Votto has a net worth of $110 million.

Kids
Abigail gets a signed ball from Voto, a free ticket from the Reds, and then she meets her baseball hero in the dugout for a Grand Slam moment that this family of lifelong Reds fans will never forget.
“I became a big fan of the Reds when I was nine, and Barry Larkin was my hero,” said Abigail’s mother, Kristen Courtney. “So to see Abigail react the way she did yesterday, it hit me on so many levels because obviously I felt for her. I was heartbroken for my baby. And I put up with it.” I also cried as a kid if this happened to Barry Larkin. So it hit me on so many levels, but to see Mr. Voto’s reaction and the whole Reds outfit today is sweet and kind and caring. I can’t do it, I don’t have words, it really touched my heart.”
And her daughter and Voto’s biggest fans couldn’t agree more.
Hall of Fame
Sheldon: When old-school voters give way to new-school, the votes will likely intensify.
Feinsand: It’s already happening.
Castrovins: I really think he gets in quickly. His contract runs until 2023. If that happens to be his last session, he is on the 2029 ballot. This is a huge voter turnout between now and then, and there has been an increased awareness of the value of votes.
Feinsand: I think Castro may be right. By the time he’s on the ballot, the turnover will have been done, plus we’ll have 12 months of “Why Joy Vote in the Hall of Fame” stories leading up to the vote that will help make his case. In fact, I’m nominating Sheldon to write that.
Sheldon: I think I’ll actually have a HOF vote until ’29. I’ll write that story. It has been a pleasure watching Voto’s career.
Castrovins: If anything, I hope Voto can open an eye to the value of other people’s case. This only applies to small committees, but look at Dwight Evans as another example of a man with over 2,000 hits and over 1,200 walks who might not have got the love his career deserved.
