Sac Fly
Joey Gallo has had a lot of experience in his MLB career. He scored 96 home runs with many of those dingers traveling absurd distances. He’s seen the most absurd change in baseball. He turned against that innings once.
But since making his MLB debut in 2015, the Rangers slugger had never experienced the unbridled joy of hitting a sacrificial fly. Not even once. But on Sunday, that changed, and it was spectacular.
It took him 1,337 big-league plate appearances, but in the Rangers’ game against the Astros, Gallo eventually hit a fly ball deep enough to score a runner from third base—his first sacrificial fly.
Is Playing Tonight
The best part about it was that the Rangers definitely knew about the streak. The entire dugout raised its arms and gave Gallo an unbelievable welcome.
The only player to go longer than Gallo without a sacrifice fly was Steve Sachs, who had a 1,388 plate appearance. The overall record was held by Greg Maddux (1,405), but he was a pitcher—not a cleanup hitter—with fly-ball swing and big-time power.
As surprising as Gallo’s sack-fly drought may sound, it’s almost perfect that the streak ended this year. The early returns for Gallo in 2019 have been solid as he is finally showing a more complete approach at the plate, hitting .281 with eight home runs and 22 RBIs. Sure, his strikeout authority is still ridiculously high (about 35 percent), but let’s not get carried away with history here.
Career Sac Flies
Rangers scored two runs on Saturday. Both runs were conducted by Nick Solak and both runs were run on sacrifice flies. There are six sacrificial flies in Solak’s career. Rangers have 13 sacrificial flies this season. Not that it really suits anything, but it’s an interesting side-by-side comparison to the fact that Nick Solk’s two sack flies on Saturday were one more than the slugger Joey Gallo in his entire MLB career.
Gallo is such an odd hitter in the sense that there are so many numbers about him that are far from ideal. One of the craziest is that the flyball hitter has just one bag in 2,003 plate appearances that spanned seven MLB seasons. And it’s even more insane to think that one of his partners can have two in the span of just one evening.
Dan Dunning’s first innings struggle is real
Dunning has scored 12.60 ERA in Dunning’s first 10 innings in 2021. After this first innings he has thrown in 37 1/3 innings this year, he has 2.65 ERA. He conceded 14 runs in the first innings and not 11 in the first innings.
