John Earl Madden (April 10, 1936 – December 28, 2021) was an American football coach and sportscaster. He was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League (NFL) for ten seasons (1969–1978) and guided them to a championship in Super Bowl XI (1977). After retiring from coaching, he served as a color commentator for NFL telecasts until 2009, for which he won 16 Sports Emmy Awards. From 1988, he lent his name, expertise, and color commentary to the John Madden Football (later Madden NFL) video game series.

Legendary sportscaster and Hall of Fame football coach John Madden died “unexpectedly” Tuesday morning, the NFL said. He was 85 years old.

Whether it’s a coach, NFL broadcaster or the face of a successful video game franchise, Madden has been a household name for football fans since the late 1970s.

After injury as a rookie with the Philadelphia Eagles, Madden turned to coaching. He started as an assistant coach at Alan Hancock College in 1960 before becoming the program’s head coach in 1962. He served as the defensive coordinator for San Diego State University from 1964 to 1966, until he returned to the NFL as a linebacker coach. In 1967 for the Raiders, who then played in Oakland.

He took over as head coaching in 1969 and led the Raiders to victory in 1977, defeating the Minnesota Vikings 32–14 in Super Bowl XI. Citing poor health, Madden announced his retirement from coaching in 1979. He never had a losing season during his stint with the Raiders and remains the most winning coach in the history of the franchise. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
