JJ Watt is an American football defensive end for the Arizona Cardinals of the National Football League. He played college football at the University of Wisconsin, and was drafted by the Houston Texans in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Regardless of what any of us thinks 32-year-old Watt has left for this season, Arizona clearly believes it’s enough. There’s no denying he displayed some 2020 fall-off, however.
Watt’s total pressures fell from 61 in 2019 to 45 last year, according to Pro Football Focus — despite 190 more pass-rushing opportunities. One season, of course, does not make it a downward trend. But Watt did earn his lowest full-season pass-rushing grade since his rookie year.

The Texans might not have been willing to let Deshaun Watson leave yet, but they granted Watt’s wish before free agency began. Houston granted the veteran his requested release, allowing Watt to sign a 2-year, $28 million deal with the Cardinals. And $20 million of that was fully guaranteed at signing.

The defensive end will miss the primetime game this week due to a shoulder injury he suffered during the second quarter of the Cardinals’ 31-5 win over the Texans. He continued to play the rest of the game with the injury. He missed the Cardinals’ only practice this week on the Tuesday, and then on Wednesday was officially listed on the injury reserve list.
