James Ryan Hayes (November 21, 1989 – August 23, 2021) was an American professional ice hockey right winger. He was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the second round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, 60th overall and played in the National Hockey League (NHL) alongside the Chicago Blackhawks, Florida Panthers, Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils. His younger brother Kevin Hayes is also a professional ice hockey player.

Former Bruins winger and Dorchester native Jimmy Hayes, who was found dead at his Milton home on August 23, died with fentanyl and cocaine in his system, his wife and father revealed on Sunday.
The news was feared by some when the community’s wildly popular pillar died after celebrating his son’s second birthday with his wife, Kristen, and infant son on a perfect Sunday seven weeks ago.
Hayes’ sudden death had no meaning in the moment. The 6-foot-5-inch, 31-year-old ex-athlete was presented as a healthy, happy young man who was blossoming into a life full of parenting, podcasting, and doing good things for others. Jimmy Hayes had a beautiful wife and two lovely boys. His parents, sisters, brothers and cousins were all around him. He had it all.
Panthers
The Bruins called him “Hessie” during his two seasons in Boston. In Florida, they called him “Broadway”. Dorchester native Jimmy Hayes, who died suddenly in August, was a popular teammate in both dressing rooms when he played for each of the franchises.
So before Boston played in Florida, on Saturday at TD Garden, two franchises honored Hayes. During the warmup, each player on both teams wore jerseys with “Hessy” and “Broadway” in place of their names, respectively, in tribute.
Before the national anthem, TD Garden played a video in Hayes’ memory showing highlights of his career, but also his community and charity work.

An autopsy revealed that fentanyl and cocaine were in his system and likely caused the 31-year-old’s death. His family publicly disclosed the results in hopes of helping others and raising awareness.

Both teams are auctioning their warmup jerseys for a charity to be jointly determined by the team and Hayes’ family. The Bruins jersey can be found here while the Panthers auction is here. The Bruins are also donating the proceeds from Saturday’s 50/50 raffle to the same charity.

Hayes, 31, was found dead at his Milton, Massachusetts, home on August 23.
The right-winger played in 334 NHL games over seven seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, Florida Panthers, Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils. His best season was in Florida in 2014–15, when he recorded 19 goals and 16 assists. His younger brother plays for the Philadelphia Flyers.
Hayes was a member of the 2009–10 Boston College national championship team, scoring a goal and assist in the national semifinal win over Miami and an assist in the final against Wisconsin.
The player’s wife, Kristen Hayes, said in a statement: “Although we are shocked and heartbroken beyond words, I love to remember my husband and father of the boys he gave to us and many others. ” on Monday.

An autopsy was performed two days after his death, but the Hayes family did not know the cause of his death until Friday, when they were on their way to New Jersey for a pregame tribute to Hayes at the Blackhawks-Devils game. That’s when Kristen Hayes received a toxicology report from the Massachusetts State Medical Examiner, which listed the cause of death as “acute intoxication due to the combined effects of fentanyl and cocaine.”
“I was completely shocked,” Kristen said. “I was so sure it had nothing to do with drugs. I really thought it wasn’t a heart attack or anything like [drugs] . . . It didn’t make sense, so it was tough. I was hoping to get a different phone call when he called. I was hoping to get some clarity and I was shocked to hear that it was him . . . He never showed any signs of conflict in the house

The Florida Panthers and Boston Bruins will honor former NHL forward Jimmy Hayes before his game at TD Garden on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; TVAS, NESN, BSFL, ESPN, NHL LIVE).
Hayes died on 23 August at the age of 31. He played in seven NHL seasons, including two each with the Panthers (2013–15) and Bruins (2015–17).
A moment of silence would be held before the game, and players on each team would wear special jerseys during the warmup that read “Hessey” and “Broadway”, the nickname Hayes had while playing in the NHL.
The jerseys will be available through auction through the Panthers and Bruins, with all funds benefiting a charity to be determined by the Hayes family and teams.
Selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the second round (number 60) of the 2008 NHL Draft, Hayes scored 109 points (54 goals, 55 points) in 334 games with the Chicago Blackhawks, Panthers, Bruins and New Jersey Devils.
