One of the most popular landing spots for the Seahawks has been Mayfield or Garoppolo. They definitely need a proven starter with Drew Locke and Geno Smith as their top two quarterbacks.

Garoppolo may not be a viable trade option for Seattle because the 49ers don’t want to offer a division rival the starting quarterback.

But given how many teams are looking for a starter at this point, San Francisco may eventually have to release Garoppolo altogether. His contract is structured so the 49ers will save $25.4 million against the cap this season, whether traded or issued.

However, the reality of the situation is that it is unlikely that any team will make that trade. The most logical destination would be the Seattle Seahawks, but it seems likely that San Francisco will trade him within the division. Furthermore, not many teams would be willing to take the $26.95 million cap hit for someone who would likely be a backup.

Because of that, the end of the story—once Garoppolo makes a full recovery from shoulder surgery and has a physical pass—is that the 49ers release the quarterback, noting that they just made $1.4 million. Dead Cap will hit. That would put him in free agency on the open market.

While the Seahawks will be very much in play there, as will some other teams, there is one dark horse landing spot that shouldn’t be overlooked: the Dallas Cowboys.
