Interceptions
The veteran quarterback completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 2,437 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions in 2022.
Sucks
Jimmy Garoppolo stepped into the starting role in San Francisco with head coach Kyle Shanahan more sincerely than he ever had during his six-year tenure with the 49ers.
With the cameras rolling, Garoppolo was caught insulting Shanahan after Jonas Griffith’s interception on a pass intended for Deebo Samuel. The conversation occurred in the final moments of the Denver Broncos’ 11–10 victory.
Garoppolo replaced Trey Lance under center after the No. 3 overall pick in 2021 broke his fibula and tore the deltoid and sesamoid ligaments in his ankle, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
During the offseason, Jimmy Garoppolo signed a deal to become the highest-paid backup quarterback in the NFL. The signing followed trade rumors over the summer involving the Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers, and New York Giants.
According to NFL Network’s Albert Breer, Garoppolo’s new deal earns him a guaranteed base salary of $6.5 million. According to Breere, the deal includes an average of $500,000 per game through roster bonuses and up to $8.45 million if he reaches certain playing-time incentives.

Raiders
The Las Vegas Raiders had a strange and unexpected ending to 2022 and their starting quarterback. Derek Carr was informed that he was being replaced as the starter after Week 16 and left the team almost immediately to avoid distraction. This led to Jarrett Stidham finishing a disappointing 6–11 season for the Raiders.
This left the Raiders in search of a starting quarterback for this season. Las Vegas then signed Jimmy Garoppolo and reunited him with head coach Josh McDaniels. The two spent three seasons together with the New England Patriots when McDaniels was the offensive coordinator.
Garoppolo was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in October 2017 and became the starter less than a month later. He started and won the last five games of the season, helping the 49ers finish 6–10.
When Garoppolo was in San Francisco, injuries prevented him from being on the field. His first season as a starter ended after playing only three games with a torn ACL.
The 49ers have had great success when Garoppolo has stayed healthy. In two seasons without any serious injuries, he led the team to the Super Bowl in 2019 and the NFC Championship in 2021.
Last season, Garoppolo’s broken foot opened the door for Broccoli Purdy to take over as the 49ers starter. Purdy led the team to the NFC Championship Game and the team let Garoppolo leave as a free agent.
Carr was the Raiders’ starting QB for nine seasons and led the team to the postseason twice – the only winning seasons in his career. After being selected in the second round in 2014, he made the Pro Bowl four times, including last season.
In 2022, Carr threw 14 interceptions for the second consecutive season, along with a career-low completion percentage. He threw just 17 interceptions in 2019 and 2020 combined. In 15 games last season, Carr had 24 touchdown passes.
