Did play today
As Garoppolo’s thumb injury left him out of action for the 49th Week 17 game against the Houston Texans, rookie quarterback Trey Lance would begin the second game of his career. His debut came in a Week 5 NFC West Divisional loss against the Arizona Cardinals.
Lance had been disappointing bowling the only start of his career. He completed only 15 of his 29 passes for 192 yards and one interception with zero touchdowns.
His rushing was far more effective than his passing as he pushed the ball 16 times for 89 rushing yards.
A week before his debut, Trey Lance took over at halftime for Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 4 against the Seattle Seahawks.
In the second half of that game, he threw 157 yards and two touchdowns, running an additional 41 yards.
Where is today
San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a UCL tear, an injury compromising his right thumb. They were initially thought to be out for several weeks, with rumors of Trey Lance starting to heat up. But what about Jimmy G’s situation ahead of today’s Week 17 matchup against the Houston Texans?
UPDATE 01/02/22: Jimmy Garoppolo is officially inactive for the 49ers today against the Texans. Trey Lance will get the start.
Will Jimmy Garoppolo Play Today Vs Texans?
Initial reports kept Garoppolo out for several weeks. However, during the practice press conference this week, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that the QB would try to practice and see if he could play on Sunday. Garoppolo didn’t practice all week and was listed as suspicious on the 49ers’ final injury report.
Why is out
It won’t be official until the inactives are released 90 minutes before kickoff, but ESPN’s Adam Schaffter reported Saturday night that 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo caused a torn UCL on his throwing hand in Houston. Won’t play against Texans. Schaffter also pointed out that the team is optimistic that Garoppolo will return versus the Rams in Week 18.
It’s no huge surprise that Garoppolo wouldn’t suit. He was officially listed as ‘doubtful’ in Friday’s status report after not practicing for a whole week. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the club was hoping their opening QB would be ready by Sunday.
Rookie quarterback Trey is in line to begin with, serving as a backup for Nate Sudfeld in the absence of Lance Garoppolo. The Lance lost his only start in Week 5 when the 49ers fell 17-10 to the Cardinals in Arizona.
