James Richard Garopolo (born November 2, 1991), nicknamed Jimmy Gee, is an American football quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL). Contract
Under a new one-year contract, Garoppolo remains in San Francisco during the 2022 season. Included in the deal are .5 million fully guaranteed base pay, and a total of .45 million per-game roster bonuses included in the play-time incentive contract, in addition to .000 per Albert Breuer.
In all, Garoppolo could earn up to .45 million – a far cry from the .2 million basic salary payable in 2022 under his old contract. Even so, it’s still a hefty potential payoff for a player returning as the supposed backup for Trey Lance.
That amount is in the best position for Garoppolo, where he somehow makes a debut for the team.
Overall, Garoppolo’s pay cut saves the 49ers nearly a million in the over-the-cap in the immediate cap space.
Injury
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that 49ers QB Trey Lance suffered a “significant” right ankle injury in Week 2’s win over the Seahawks. Lance is expected to require surgery that will “likely” end his season. San Francisco will turn back to QB Jimmy Garoppolo, which will mean a significant turnaround in the offense. The 49ers’ pass rate will climb, and there will be more carries to move around because the Garoppolo won’t be carrying as many.
