Jimmy Butler III (born September 14, 1989) is an American professional basketball player for the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association (NBA). After a year playing college basketball for Tyler Junior College, he transferred to Marquette University. He was drafted by the Chicago Bulls as the 30th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft. Nicknamed “Jimmy Buckett”, Butler is a six-time NBA All-Star, a four-time All-NBA Team honoree, and a five-time NBA All-Defensive Team honoree. In 2015, he was named the NBA Most Improved Player. In 2021, he led the league in stealth.

With all the buzz about which team has the best backcourt, the Chicago Bulls have thrown their hats into the ring with Derrick Rose and Jimmy Butler.

Butler is now in his fourth year as a pro, but the 2014-15 campaign marks the first year he and Rose have been able to play a good amount of game together and develop a real chemistry. Rose’s meniscus tear limited her total to 198 minutes last season.

The Bulls tried to find the right backcourt partner for Rose through Keith Bogans and Rip Hamilton, but little did they know they drafted him in 2011. Butler was expected to “leap” last season, but injuries slowed him down. However, the development and work he did in the off-season is now evident.

Rose and Butler are meshing well. Their style is slightly different, but as both players continue to improve as shooters, the pair will get better. Butler goes to the line eight times per game, while Rose is doing most of his damage from mid-range.

Let’s detail each player’s progress this season and see how far the Bulls can go with this pairing.

Rose has improved a lot over the past two weeks, but she still has her fair share of aggressive struggles. Teams tend to go down the screen every so often during pick-and-roll sets, and Rose’s inability to drop long jump shots has affected her effectiveness.

Luckily for Rose, Chicago spent the summer building a strong roster. More importantly, Butler has taken an unexpected leap—and a huge leap at that—to put an enormous amount of pressure on Rose to do everything. According to ESPN Chicago’s Nick Friedel, this is what the 26-year-old point guard is extremely grateful for:

It’s a good feeling. It’s the first time I’ve done this while in the league. It takes a lot of pressure off everyone, where someone can easily go for 15 or 20 points in a couple of quarters and take the [opposition] team away very quickly. 

Hometown

The Chicago Bulls selected Jimmy Butler as the 30th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. The Chicago Bulls had a large team, so it was hard for Jimmy to come in minutes during his rookie year. His coaches were impressed by his hard work and the hours he put in in the gym. He gradually gained the trust of the coaching staff and by the end of his third season in the league, he averaged over 38.7 minutes a night and was selected to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team.

During the 2014-2015 NBA season, all his stats took a huge jump. He was selected to his first NBA All-Star Game and won the NBA’s best player of the season. For the next two seasons, he would become the Bulls’ number one substitute. He also earned his first All-NBA selection. Due to his competitive nature, he used to clash with players who were not working hard enough according to his opinion. Because of this, the Bulls and Jimmy decided to part ways and were traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

His tenure with the Timberwolves was a tumultuous one. Although he led the franchise to its first playoff appearance, he had a similar problem with the Minnesota Young Stars in Chicago. He requested a trade after the 2017–2018 NBA season following the infamous ‘Third Stringers’ incident and was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers 13 games in the 2018–2019 NBA season.

With the 76ers, he was the secondary offensive option behind Joel Embiid. They lost to the eventual winners, the Toronto Raptors, in a series of seven games to Kawhi Leonard Buzzer Beater. Unhappy with the coach, Brett Brown, Jimmy decided not to re-sign with the 76ers and took his talents to South Beach to play for the Miami Heat for the 2019-2020 season.

In Miami, he perpetuated the story of having locker room cancer. The culture of the Miami Heat appreciated and rewarded hard work and it was a perfect marriage between player and organization. Despite all odds, The Heat reached the finals.

Big face coffee

It started as a joke, but now National Basketball Association star Jimmy Butler has officially launched a coffee brand.

The 32-year-old Miami Heat star started his company in the 2020 NBA COVID Bubble in Orlando, Florida, selling cups of coffee for $20 each. After that season, Butler applied for a trademark around Bigface and began plans to officially launch his own coffee company. And on Friday he announced that he has joined Shopify’s Maker Program to promote his Bigface coffee brand.

In an interview with CNBC, Butler admitted that he doesn’t aim to be “the best at making coffee,” but said he is taking the business seriously.

“I’m excited to wake up in the morning to train and work out,” Butler said. “Then I want to hurry up and get home so I can practice my bartending,” he said, referring to making coffee drinks. For now, he’ll sell branded merchandise like coffee mugs and NFTs at Shopify. He plans to sell the beans later.

Butler waited to launch Bigface on Friday, International Coffee Day, two days after National Coffee Day in the US.

Butler said he traveled to coffee farms, including Costa Rica, to study the coffee business. He said his discussions with the farmers were “special” and that he wants to use Bigface to “tell the story behind the beans and the farmers and their families. A cup of coffee takes time, effort, energy.”

When the NBA went to Orlando to save its season last year, Butler saw a void in the secluded Disney campus because he didn’t believe the coffee options were good. Butler used his espresso machine and coffee beans from El Salvador to sell coffee for $20 a cup.

Butler found that the limited number of coffee-lovers on campus were more inclined to buy a better coffee. And this allowed them to capture a major portion of the roughly $2,000 a day they provide to players.
