James Andrew Leonhardt (born October 27, 1982) is an American football coach and former player. He is the interim head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers football team. Leonard played college football at Wisconsin and played professionally as a safety for ten seasons in the National Football League (NFL). Leonard was signed by the Buffalo Bills in 2005 as an undrafted free agent after playing college football at the University of Wisconsin. He remained at Wisconsin as their defensive coordinator the past five seasons, turning down several college and NFL opportunities, in hopes of potentially earning a head coaching gig at his alma mater when the time was right. When Paul Crist was fired, Leonhardt was thrown into an untenable position at midseason, where he not only had to right the ship with the locker room, but also deal with a coaching staff he could not assemble.
