Guarantees win

Michigan football’s Karan Higdon was not the first to guarantee a win against Ohio State.

The senior running back was only following the lead of his coach, Jim Harbaugh, who made a famous guarantee 32 years ago.

In 1986, U-M entered the week of the Ohio State game with a 10–1 record after losing 20–17 to Minnesota on November 15.

Five days before Wolverine’s trip to Columbus, Harbaugh – then a senior and the team’s star quarterback – sat down for an interview.

This is where Harbaugh and Higdon differed.

On Monday, Higdon was asked if he would step down as their head coach to guarantee Michigan beat Ohio State.

He looked down in thought for 3 seconds and gazed at the tight end Zach Gentry for the next few seconds before looking up and responding.

“Yes, I do. I do,” said Higdon. “I feel the same way. I have full faith in my brothers, this team and this coaching staff.

“As a captain, I will take that stand. Why not?”

Meanwhile, Harbaugh came right out and said it without asking.

“The last 10 matches we’ve played don’t matter to us right now. It’s down to a one game season,” Harbaugh said earlier. “Ohio State is our season. If we win this match then it is a successful season. If not, it’s not a successful season.”
