Despite talking about never getting over the hump, Jim Harbaugh finally did it in the 2021 season with the Michigan Wolverines. He defeated rival Ohio State for the first time in his tenure and punched a ticket to the college football playoffs.

But while college fans may know that Harbaugh previously coached at Stanford, they may be less familiar with his NFL ties.

So where exactly did he coach in the NFL and what teams was he associated with? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Harbaugh spent four years in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers and was quite successful. He had a career record of 44-19-1 in 2011-14. His career lasted from 1987-2001.

During the 2014 season there was talk of boiling tension between Harbaugh and the 49ers’ front office. He reportedly held extension talks with the team last season, which contributed to his future in-season drama with the team.

The 49ers have completely rebuilt their coaching staff after splitting from Harbaugh, appointing Jim Tomasula as head coach and getting rid of almost all prior reigns. Harbaugh quickly found another job, agreeing to take over his alma mater after leaving the 49ers.

Letting Harbaugh out of his contract for a year seemed like an odd move for the franchise, considering how successful he had been in three NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl in four years. The more information that comes out, the more it seems that San Francisco inspired the change.

Tomasula and his staff have a high bar to live by, but at least they have more support from York and general manager Trent Balke than Harbaugh did at the end of his term.
