Trade
Seattle made a big splash on Monday, reportedly bringing down All-Star outfielder Jesse Winker and third baseman Eugenio Suarez in a trade with the Reds. The move was first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passon and later confirmed by the team. The move promotes a Mariners offense that finished 11th in the American League last season, and from second to last in slugging percentages.
The Reds will reportedly receive a player named Justin Dunn, Brandon Williamson, Jake Fraley, and more in return, per MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand and The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
Winker, 28, has been one of baseball’s best hitters over the past two seasons. Since the start of 2020, he has hit .292/.392/.552 with 36 home runs in 164 games. During his five-year career, he has never seen a season worse than 109 with the OPS, and owns 128 career appearances in that category. They may be ticketed for a spot in the outfield of Seattle or get the bulk of their bat at the designated hitter spot.
Suarez signed a seven-year, $66 million deal prior to the 2018 season and initially lived up to that price tag. He made the All-Star team in 2018 and scored 49 home runs in 2019 but faltered in the last two years. Since 2020, Suárez has batted at .199/.293/.440, recording almost 30% of his plate attendance.
Contract
The Mariners drastically increased their lineup, announcing the acquisition of star outfielder Jesse Winker and third baseman Eugenio Suarez from the Reds. Seattle will reportedly assume the entirety of the three years plus a $35MM balance on Suarez’s contract. In return, they are sending pitching prospect Brandon Williamson, outfielder Jake Fraley, right-hander Justin Dunn and a player later to Cincinnati.
Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry DiPotto has been open about his hunt for offensive help throughout the winter. Seattle had already signed AL Cy Young winner Robbie Ray to a five-year contract, but he had already done little to escalate the offense aside from the deal he brought in Adam Frazier from the Padres.
Winker got his due as an All-Star for the first time last season, but he has quietly been an excellent hitter for a while. He had a WRC of 127 or better (at least 27 percentage points above the league average) in four of the five seasons in his career. The former complementary first-rounder has been particularly influential over the years. Going back to the start of the 2020 campaign, he has a .292/.392/.552 line, with 36 home runs from 668 plate appearances.
Last year, he counted 485 trips for Dish and hit a personal-best .305/.394/.556 with a strong 10.9% walk rate and 15.5% strikeout percentage, seven points below the league average. Winker rarely swings and misses or chases pitches outside the strike zone, and is capable of doing a lot of damage when he makes contact. They posted above average marks in terms of barrel rate, hard contact percentage and average exit velocity.
Fantasy
The Reds continued their teardown on Monday, sending out outfielder Jesse Winker and infielder Eugenio Suarez to the Mariners for pitchers Justin Dunn and Brandon Williamson and outfielder Jake Fraley. This comes after Wade loses Miley to a discount, Nick Castellanos to free agency, and trades Sonny Gray and Tucker Barnhart, a significant part of his recent corps.
And it seems like a very mild return to the deal involving Winker, mainly because it also includes dumping Suarez’s contract. The move makes sense for both sides from that point of view, as the Reds look to be on the cheap and the Mariners hope to prove that last year’s playoff push was no fluke.
Let’s look at each team’s return and see how it affects each player’s notional value:
All things considered, I think you have to see this as a net loss to the fantasy appeal of both players, if for no other reason than they are leaving one of the best hitters parks in baseball. I don’t think the bandbox ballpark of the Reds is a product of either, but the move from Great American to Safeco Field is probably a downgrade.
