Death:
Jerry Remy, the beloved longtime Boston Red Sox broadcaster and former Major League Baseball infielder, died Saturday night after a lengthy battle with lung cancer, the team announced. He was 68.
“We are saddened by the loss of a beloved player, broadcaster, and 13-year cancer warrior,” Red Sox principal owner John Henry said in a statement Sunday.
Pizza:
Late Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy had 33 years of calls at Fenway, and one of them stands out as one of the most bizarre in-game situations ever put on tape.
It involves a thrown slice of pizza. The two broadcasters in the booth at the game, against the Angels at Fenway in April 2007, were Remy and Don Orsillo. A pop-up drifted into foul territory along the third baseline around the end of the 7th inning, when a confrontation between two fans caught the attention of the broadcasters.

Is still alive:
Remy had stepped away from his role as color analyst for New England Sports Network, the local cable home of the Red Sox, in August to undergo treatment for lung cancer.
It was his seventh cancer diagnosis since 2008, according to WCVB-TV Boston. His last public appearance came Oct. 5 when he threw out the first pitch at the American League’s Wildcard Game between the New York Yankees and Red Sox.
