Before enrolling in Mississippi State, Simmons was involved in a fight between his sister, her mother, and another woman.

Video of the incident showed Simmons, a senior in Knoxby County, Mississippi, hitting the woman several times, then walking away.

Simmons was found guilty of malicious mischief. He pleaded not to resist the simple assault and paid the fine and compensation for the woman’s medical bills.

Simmons was suspended by Mississippi State for the team’s 2016 season opener.

“I’m not perfect,” Simmons said on a conference call Thursday night. “I made a mistake. I own it. I wasn’t raised like this, to hit a woman. I’m sorry. Grateful to have the opportunity, a fresh start in college.”

The Titans picked Jeffrey Simmons with the 19th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Simmons began his rookie season on the non-football injury list in February 2019 due to a serious knee injury sustained during training. He missed the first six games of the season, but was added to the 53-man roster in Week 7. He played a total of nine games (three starts) during the regular season and all three games in the playoffs.
