For me, this visit exemplified the life of an Olympic journalist, an immersion every four years, filled with apologies from subjects for staying away in the interim. I did the same stay four years ago, when Shiffrin, just 18, was on the verge of Olympic success (she became the youngest slalom gold medalist in history). No complaints on the gig. The drive from Denver on I-70 through the mountains to Vail is a cleanup trip, climbing up tree line and plunging into deep canyons. , I traveled several times on family ski holidays and to cover other competitions. A couple of times to interview distance runners. As long as the sky was blue and the roads were clear, it was never a stressful job.

Plus, Mikaela and her family was an important and engaging story that I was excited to report and write again.
